Faux pas.
On Wednesday, ASSU held its spring social. This time around, the President of UofT, David Naylor, also attended.
Preethy and I were standing there discussing something when Naylor came up to us and started asking us about our majors. At one point his cell phone started ringing and he excused himself for a moment. He then came back to us and spoke to us about how his car was in for repairs, and he complained about his $700 rims.
That’s got to be one of the most insensitive and stupid things a university president can say to two students, after he’s quite vocally called for tuition fee increases. It’s like he’s rubbing it in. Someone get the guy a clue.

We need a tuition increase: class sizes are huge, not enough professors, leading to all sorts of problems: students not being able to get into classes they want, having a bad experience in the ones they have because of massive over-crowding, etc.

Maybe that’s a valid argument (I won’t address it because that’s beating a dead horse). But you don’t have to rub it into the faces of students with massive debtloads by complaining about $700 rims.

What we need is more government funding for universities. Tuition fees has been steadily skyrocketing in the states, but the quality of education in American Universities hasn’t necessarily improved.
Why isn’t Naylor asking for more government funding? That’s what I find perplexing.

Honestly, while it might not have been the most tactful thing to say, it’s really not a big deal.

Why didn’t you bring it up Naylor? & Where does ASSU post information such as ‘there is a spring social on ####’ etc etc. Wondering!
